BLACKFIELD GARDENING CLUB – CHANGE OF VENUE FOR FUTURE MEETINGS House Plants Totton & District Gardeners’ Society hold their meetings at Totton 3 Score Club Hall on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from February to November, starting at 7.30pm. e next meeting takes place on Wednesday 8th March for a talk by Chris Bird, a brilliant speaker from Sparsholt College, titled ‘House Plants’. Their Spring Open Flower Show will take place on Saturday 25th Steamship Shieldhall Announces Additional ‘Windrush 75th Anniversary’ Sailing e arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury docks in 1948, brought 500 passengers from the Caribbean, in a moment that shaped modern Britain. Steamship Shieldhall, Southampton’s heritage steamship, is delighted to be staging a cruise with Black History Month South on Saturday 24th June between 2.30pm and 6pm, celebrating the 75th anniversary of its arrival, with an audio/visual display and commentary re ecting the history of the Windrush generation, plus some exciting live entertainment. A selection of Caribbean food and drink will also be available to purchase. With 100 tickets allocated to guests, Shieldhall has a limited 100 tickets available for general sale. Black History Month South in association with SS Shieldhall aims to make 24th June a day of celebration in Southampton to mark the 75th anniversary of the Windrush and the original Windrush Pioneers and to raise the awareness and public understanding of the history of race and migration to the City across the decades. As Shieldhall steams down Southampton Water to the Solent, she will also pass the cruise ships Azamara Pursuit; Celebrity Silhouette; Iona and Ventura in berth, and on her return will see a number of cruise ships depart – always the chance to sound her whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ’! Whilst on the cruise, guests are encouraged to visit Shieldhall’s impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork, admire the ship’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic), talk to the Captain and volunteer crew; listen to an informed commentary on the sights and sounds of Southampton Water and the Solent, pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships, walk the teak decks, relax in the Saloon with a wide range of refreshments including tea/ co ee, real ale, a range of Titanic bottled beers, wine and hot and cold food, available on all trips. Courtesy parking is available close to the Shieldhall berth. Children will have fun with an interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board! Tickets for the cruise are £42 adults; £15 children aged 3-15 and £99 for a family (2 adults and 2 children).
