Simon Chadwick’s book, New Forest Friends & e Litterbugs, continues to capture the minds of children nearly 30 years on from when it was originally published in 1994. Originally published by New Forest District Council and again by Simon’s own publishing company Ceretopia Books in 2002, New Forest Friends & e Litterbugs, teaches children about the importance of protecting the animals of the New Forest by taking our litter home. e story is written from the animals’ perspective with aptly named characters including Beaulieu the hedgehog and Exbury the rabbit. As part of a school wide sustainability project, year 2 pupils at Orchard Infant School, investigated the negative impact litter can have on wildlife and nature in our local community. Reading the book in class generated lots of questions that the children wanted to ask Simon, so, one of their teachers suggested that they should write to him. Simon comments: “It was such a lovely surprise to get is still having so much impact all these years later.” Simon kindly took time out of his busy schedule to answer each and every question that the children had sent him, from why he wrote a book about rubbish to how old he was when he wrote the book. Year 2 Leader, Mr Bowie comments: “We were so excited when Simon replied personally, answering ALL of our questions. We are so lucky to have such an inspirational author in our local community!” New Forest Friends & e Litterbugs along with many of Simon’s other books are available to buy from e Herald O ce and through the Ceratopia Books website: ceratopiabooks.co.uk the handwritten letters. Their questions were so thoughtful and included some I’ve never been asked before. I couldn’t stop grinning.
