We were pioneers of environmental education when the Countryside Education Trust was founded in 1975; now we are pioneers of climate education. Understanding that caring for the environment is an integral part of finding solutions to climate change is vital work.” Jane Cooper, Chief Executive of the CET said: “We are looking forward to helping people of all ages to learn more about the challenges of climate change and empowering them to act. We believe that this building will provide an inclusive base for climate education in the New Forest and beyond.” e Fort Climate Centre has also bene ted from a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the Green and Blue Horizons from City to Forest scheme, led by the New Forest National Park Authority. For the CET, this has involved developing new climatefocused courses for young adults and professionals, enlarging its volunteering capacity and engaging seven interns in a variety of climate and environment projects. ese projects have ranged from encouraging people to tackle food waste to monitoring trees at risk from a changing climate in the Beaulieu Estate’s ancient woodlands. Patrick Heneghan, Deputy Chair of the New Forest National Park Authority and Chair of the Green and Blue Horizons Board, said: “The New Forest National Park is internationally important for nature and we’re already seeing some of the impacts of climate change here. It’s vital that we increase people’s understanding about these issues and how we can all make a difference. The Fort Climate Centre is playing an important role in both raising awareness and directly engaging people, particularly those from the younger generation, as well as helping us develop solutions in the Forest.” Interns supported by the Green and Blue Horizons project spoke to e Duchess about their project work. Children from non-farming backgrounds, who form the CET’s a er-school club, showed e Duchess the animals they care for and talked about their prizewinning attendance at events to demonstrate their animal handling, such as the New Forest Show. e Duchess met some of the CET’s volunteers who were planting climate-resilient crops and she was introduced to the CET’s oldest and youngest volunteers – 90-year-old Marg Verdon and nine-yearold Noah Barnard. She also met children from Beaulieu School who demonstrated various climate games, including a food miles race. Fundraising had taken the total raised to £287 when Healthy Pet Store - which is based in Salisbury Road Arcade in Totton - stepped in and paid the £713 balance required to hit the £1,000 mark and mean the 24th June parade can go ahead. Healthy Pet Store Managing Director Deborah Burrows, a Totton resident, said that when her team alerted her to the risk that the carnival may not go ahead this year she decided to step in and do what she could. “The carnival and the parade of floats through the town is one of the highlights of the year for Totton, and I know a lot of our customers get a huge amount of joy from it,” said Deborah. “The thought that it might not go ahead this year because of this cash shortfall seemed such a pity to me. We are proud to be part of the Totton business community and we live in the town too - so we knew that if we could help we should help. I am delighted to have made the money up to the £1,000 that was required to ensure that, once again this year, the show will go on.” Carnival Committee member and Town Councillor Managing Director Deborah Burrows Dave Hills said insurance, rst aid cover, licences, road closures, and many other things needed to be paid for this year’s event. “We are so grateful to the generosity of Deborah and the whole team at Healthy Pet Store in Totton who really stepped forward and provided us with the funding we needed to ensure the Totton and Eling Carnival will go ahead as planned this year,” he said. “Traders like Healthy Pet Store are the beating heart of the Totton commercial community and their generosity means the biggest community event of the year for the town will be going ahead once again.” THANK YOU FROM HYTHE PIER HERITAGE ASSOCIATION Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has recently donated foreign or old coins to the collection point in e Herald o ce. e latest round of donations has raised a further £108.49 towards their work preserving the pier and train. e contributions are currently helping to restore the train carriages and the tractor units and work will soon begin on restoring the supports for the station area of the pier. Simon Chadwick’s book, New Forest Friends & e Litterbugs, continues to capture the minds of children nearly 30 years on from when it was originally published in 1994. Originally published by New Forest District Council and again by Simon’s own publishing company Ceretopia Books in 2002, New Forest Friends & e Litterbugs, teaches children about the importance of protecting the animals of the New Forest by taking our litter home. e story is written from the animals’ perspective with aptly named characters including Beaulieu the hedgehog and Exbury the rabbit. As part of a school wide sustainability project, year 2 pupils at Orchard Infant School, investigated the negative impact litter can have on wildlife and nature in our local community. Reading the book in class generated lots of questions that the children wanted to ask Simon, so, one of their teachers suggested that they should write to him. Simon comments: “It was such a lovely surprise to get is still having so much impact all these years later.” Simon kindly took time out of his busy schedule to answer each and every question that the children had sent him, from why he wrote a book about rubbish to how old he was when he wrote the book. Year 2 Leader, Mr Bowie comments: “We were so excited when Simon replied personally, answering ALL of our questions. We are so lucky to have such an inspirational author in our local community!” New Forest Friends & e Litterbugs along with many of Simon’s other books are available to buy from e Herald O ce and through the Ceratopia Books website: ceratopiabooks.co.uk the handwritten letters. Their questions were so thoughtful and included some I’ve never been asked before. I couldn’t stop grinning. Scott Chilton, 49, returns to the force where he began his policing career as an 18-year-old and has served most of his career. With 31 years of experience, he worked his way through uniform policing and spent 16 years as a detective. He has undertaken a range of strategic roles leading policing commands, led to con rmation of Chief Constable Chilton’s appointment, he outlined his passion for local policing and o cer visibility, ensuring that neighbourhood teams are connected with their communities and targeting community crimes. He also outlined his commitment in delivering the Police and Crime Commissioner, Donna Jones’ ‘More Police, Safer Streets’ Police and Crime Plan, welcoming her recent announcement to bring in even more police o cers as part of a recent budget approval, which will help improve visibility within local communities. Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones said: “I am delighted to welcome Scott Chilton as the new Chief Constable of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. Scott has extensive experience as a senior police officer, having already been a Chief in Dorset, and I am really pleased to be welcoming him back to his home force to lead the constabulary into a new era. Scott and I have a shared vision for policing and it starts with strengthening and developing neighbourhood policing. As Commissioner and with Scott’s support, I have already committed to reintroducing named local bobbies for every community by April 2024. Together we want to make Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the safest places to live, work and visit, supported by strong, traditional local policing teams which connect and support communities to reduce crime. As Commissioner, I know that driving down the crimes that matter the most to the public, increasing police visibility in neighbourhoods, and creating a force that is tough on crime to bring offenders to justice is what the public rightly expect, and I am confident Scott will lead the constabulary with these ambitions at the very core of his leadership.” Scott Chilton, New Chief Constable for Hampshire and Isle of Wight most recently as chief constable in Dorset and as the national lead for investigations. CC Chilton said: “Having strong relationships with our local communities is the bedrock of policing. We know that people want to feel connected with their local teams and to feel safe. I share that view. This means relentlessly pursuing those who commit crime and bring harm and misery to communities, providing first class investigations to ensure those responsible face the consequences of their actions, with kindness and compassion being at the heart of our response to victims. As well as being your Chief Constable, I am also a resident of Hampshire, with many of my family and friends living here too. So both personally and professionally, I have the same expectations as you and I am committed to making sure that Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is safe for everyone.” During the Police and Crime Panel meeting that Interested in Genealogy and Family History?
