All designs depicted toys from Socrates to the present day. It was to the seaside rst with bucket and spade in hand. In 1871 the bank holiday act was passed meaning everyone could take a break away o en by train. e arrangement in a child’s metal bucket had fatsia leaves, yellow Carnations (sand) and dried blue statys (sea). Two matching arrangements were set in front of a representation of a beach hut. In 1968 ‘Hot Wheels’ were manufactured and they were treated to a very colourful arrangement. Featuring phormium leaves, Rubus tricoulor, red Chrysanthemums, deep pink Canna lilies with medilino sticks - a striking design. Amazingly the next toy was mentioned in the writings of Socrates as a form of exercise. In Victorian times boys had metal hoops but girls had wooden. Now days it’s plastic ‘Hula Hoops’, which are still used for exercise. A cascade of hoops made a dramatic display. Using Acacia, Ivy, Hebe as a base Alison added beautiful lilac Roses, yellow Carnations, pink Stocks and Clematis. One arrangement at the top and a larger one at the bottom of the cascade. ‘Lego’ was designed in Denmark in 1958. ( e English translation of Lego is play well). Phormium leaves and seed heads arranged vertically with a Cymbidium orchid in yellow and deep red Chrysanthemums. Small heads of hellebore were at the base. To conclude they were shown a frame of pink ribbons and organza. It could only be ‘Barbie’!! Designed in 1958 and introduced to a toy fayre in New York in 1959. Fatsia leaves, Pittosporum, Sinecio, pink Antirrhinum, white Dendrobium orchids, pink spray Roses and Hellebores made a delightful design. A smaller version accompanied the principal arrangement. Alison Finch’s designs were lovely and all accompanied by clever props which added to the stories.
