But training takes time so if you have a small dog, it’s far more tempting to pick them up when you want them to move. e problem with this is that small dogs don’t necessarily enjoy handling any more than bigger dogs, they’ve just got less choice in the matter. is is why overhandling is frequently a contributory factor when small dogs are biting or growling. Teaching a hand target helps with: Asking your dog to move without pulling, pushing or bribing We all respond better to being asked to do something rather than being physically man-handled and dogs are no di erent. A dog who readily cooperates when you ask them to do something is much easier to live with than one who resists. Playing ‘Keep Away’ Perhaps you’ve resorted to using food to trick your dog into doing something they don’t like, or maybe you’re not sure how to train with food without it becoming a bribe. is is common and can be overcome. When your dog keeps just out of reach or they refuse to do something unless you ‘show them the money’, a hand target is an e ective way of turning this around. Preventing Growling, Biting, Snapping Hand targeting helps give dogs a sense of choice and control, building con dence and making biting less likely because it gives them an opportunity to communicate in other ways. Essential Life Skill Training Recall - Use a hand target to bring your dog to a stop next to you, preventing the ‘ y by’ Loose Lead - Use a hand target to keep your dog close when you need to pass someone on a path Getting on Scales - Use a hand target to guide your dog onto the scales at the vet or pet shop Cooperative Care - Asking for familiar behaviours in unfamiliar environments can reduce stress by creating predictability, helping your dog feel more secure If your dog is already growling or biting, please ask me for help. ere are lots of reasons why your dog might not want to be handled, including pain, so it’s important to identify the root cause.
