For its sixth annual walking event, the charity is inviting participants to choose their own route, date and distance and ask friends and family to sponsor their steps and raise money to support local people a ected by cancer. Event organiser, Lauren Flitcro , says: “Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. What’s more, walking and being in nature can make us feel so much better. You can cover your target distance on one day or break it up into more manageable chunks throughout June. Wherever you choose to walk and how far you cover, we’d love to see lots of people come together virtually in June to do their bit for local people.” Since 2017, Christine Weller, who lives near Petersfield, has been lacing up her walking boots to complete sponsored challenges to raise money for Wessex Cancer Trust. She heard about the charity through close friends when they were supported through a cancer diagnosis. She says: “I love walking. It’s a great way to get out and about and, of course, it’s so good for me! So, I combine something I love with the opportunity to raise funds for Wessex Cancer Trust, which is very close to my heart. I always feel better after a walk, and nothing stops me getting out in the fresh air. It gives me time to think about what’s going on, or to think about nothing at all. There are some wonderful routes right on our doorsteps throughout Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight, and I’ve also recently discovered parkwalk which has evolved from the famous Saturday morning parkrun. You walk the same distance – just over 3 miles (5k) and it’s a great opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and be part of the community. I’m likely to be abroad at the time of this year’s Walk for Hope, but because it’s virtual I can still be a part of it.” When you sign up, you’ll get some recommended routes if you need inspiration, fundraising tips and walking guides. You’ll also get a medal once you’ve achieved your steps. Tickets are £15 for an adult and £10 for under 16s, and there’s a fundraising target of £100.
