Club News On ursday 9th March the group was given an interesting and informative talk by Martin Petch on the history of trams. With the aid of slides, he was able to illustrate many heritage trams from around the country. Trams ran in Southampton from 1879 until 1949. Until 1938 tra c was constricted by the medieval Bargate and from 1923 a fully enclosed dome roof design was adopted. e end of Southampton trams came in 1949 and most of the eet was scrapped. In 1974 the Southampton Tram Project started when an open top tram was found. en two more Southampton trambodies were located and these were deemed more suitable for restoration. One was a domed roof car and students from the technical college dismantled it and started the restoration. Project members supported the students by preparing materials and o ering detailed advice as best they could as the car was over 100 years old and its domed roof makes it a nationally distinctive type of tram. Restoration is on-going. e project now has its own premises at the Solent Sky Museum. Thursday of each month, starting 7.30pm, at Netley Marsh Community Hall, Woodlands Rd, SO40 7GH. Do go along and meet them. You will receive a warm welcome. is means it is part of an accredited museum and can welcome visitors and attract more funding. e museum is keen to lay a short length of tram track much to the project members’ delight. More information on progress and contact details can be found on the project’s Facebook page (www. facebook.com/Tram57Project).
