Lasting Legacy in the New Forest ground, these are remains of the paths the POW once walked on. Aside from small pieces of broken concrete on Setley Plain there is still evidence of the men and the work they did in the wider local area, but only if you know where to look. One example is on the Exbury Estate, where etched into a wooden beam in an out-house is the message “POW Wolfgang and Horst 1947 – 1948”. Unfortunately, nothing is known of the two men who scratched their names into the woodwork. Similarly, three POW set their names into wet concrete near Hatchet Pond in 1947. Bauer, Ernst, and Wamser had been working at Hatchet Mill in East Boldre. e last of the POW in Britain were repatriated in November 1948. An estimated 25,000 German men remained in the country voluntarily a er their release. How many exactly remained in the local area isn’t known, but those that did stay, and those that went home, all le their mark on the New Forest in one way or another.
