Hounds for Heroes assistance dog A PIECE OF HISTORY Wembley Stadium is 100 years old this year. Since it rst opened in 1923, it has been home to some of the most historic and memorable moments of the last century. As part of the Wembley 100 celebrations they asked the nation to share their personal memories of the stadium. Jonathan Smith, who lives locally in Southampton, shared a memory of his Grandfather which has been featured in the Wembley Stadium 100 years of magical memories. 28th April 1923 was a special day for Wembley Stadium as it prepared to open for the rst time for that year’s FA Cup Final. It was also a special day for a then 26 year old William Smith who set o for Wembley to see his beloved West Ham United take on Bolton Wanderers in the nal. William was one of an estimated 200,000 people who made the trip to Wembley that day, for a nal made famous by a white horse called Billy who had to enter the pitch to control the crowd. World War One veteran William managed to grab himself a piece of history that day when he bought a programme. It was something he would cherish and look a er for the rest of his life. In 1978 when he was aged 81 he wrote a letter to his son saying to keep hold of the programme and to hand to it his grandson Jonathan for safekeeping saying“… If he keeps it, it will be quite a curiosity in the year 2023!” Jonathan Smith, who is from Southampton said: “When I was a boy growing up in the 1970’s, he would show me his programme from that game. He promised me, one day, I could have the programme. Well, I’ve definitely kept it and it remains one of my prized possessions.” Jonathan Smith with his 100 year old programme Car Boot Sale A Car Boot Sale is taking place at Memorial Car Park in Totton on Sunday 4th June from 9am to 12noon (weather permitting).
