Waterside Medical Practice’s Healthy Haven is a space for quiet re ection, a bereavement support group, events and open days, and is used by patients, medical sta , gardening volunteers and the wider local community. e Healthy Haven Beautiful Border at the Spring Fair featured colourful owers, herbs, fruit and vegetables within a wildlife-friendly environment. All equipment and materials used to create the Beautiful Border were either recycled or donated by the local community. Julia Baker, designer of the Healthy Haven Beautiful Border said: “Our Beautiful Border was designed to represent the ethos and atmosphere of the Healthy Haven garden at the rear of the Medical Practice, with its recycled garden furniture and colourful eclectic mix of locally donated plants. Money to buy additional Bennett. All are local, many within walking distance, meeting three days a week to maintain the garden and enjoy the fresh air and each other’s company.” e Beautiful Border was a year in the planning and took two and a half days to build at Beaulieu, before it was opened to the public over the three days of the Fair. People ocked to look at the garden and take photos; they enjoyed the spring colour of the garden from the tulips and the vegetable garden. e volunteers made many contacts and they spoke to visitors from as far away as Cornwall, Bristol, the Isle of Wight, Reading and Brighton. The judges particularly liked the vegetable garden which was on one side of the path. e volunteers were delighted with their Silver Merit. At the end of the show the volunteers sold o a lot of the plants, for which there was a huge demand. plants has been raised at weekly plant sales. Like the existing Healthy Haven garden, our Beautiful Border was divided into sections, representing our flower garden, woodland area and ‘Growing for Eating’ section, with the focal point being an upcycled Sunflower Bench which was originally rescued from a reclamation yard for £20! Black wrought iron and terracotta were chosen as a theme to give a feeling of unity within the Border, matched by the terracotta brickwork in the path. The Theme of ‘My Garden Escape’ was ideal for us as the garden truly represents an escape for the volunteers, patients and staff who use the garden. The group of people maintaining the Healthy Haven garden and designing, building and manning the Beautiful Border are all volunteers, headed up by volunteer Head Gardener, Chris Adam Frost with Healthy Haven Head Gardener Chris Bennett The Healthy Haven Beautiful Border Bartley Horticultural Society will be meeting on Thursday 20th July for a talk by Martyn Cox titled ‘Clever Ways To Grow Vegetables’.
