Rob Young won the Division 2 medal with a very creditable nett 69, while in Division 1 Ken Scott annihilated the opposition with nett 63 helped enormously by a birdie and 7 pars, 6 of those on the back 9. Division 1: 1st Ken Scott 63 nett, 2nd Dave Jones 67 nett, 3rd Pete Ayers 69 nett (back 9 31 nett). Rhinefield Probus Club April Meeting e April meeting opened with members observing a minutes silence in a mark of respect for member Richard Jeans. Richard, a popular member of the Club since 2009, sadly died at the beginning of the month. He was an active supporter of the club and leader of the walking group. Vice Chairman Lew Cohen led members in their tributes. e speaker for the month was member Roger Morgan whose talk was entitled ‘RAF Ludford Magna The Secret Squadron’. He described how his interest in the history of this unit was aroused when he learned that his father, who had set up and run a wireless shop in the Black Country, had enlisted in 1943 and was posted to 101 Squadron RAF Ludford Magna, and the subsequent discovery of a box of photographs taken by his father during that time. 101 Squadron Ludford Magna, was set up on 15th June 1943 to engage in a highly secret telecommunications war against the enemy. It’s Lancaster Bombers were modi ed to carry a crew of 8 as opposed to the normal seven, the extra man was a specialist radio operator who spoke uent German. His task was to identify the VHF frequencies and speech channels the German ghter controllers were using and jam them or put out con icting instructions. e ‘Airborne Cigar’ (or ABC), as it was known, was devised by the British Telecommunications Research Establishment at Malvern in response to the urgent need to reduce the number of Allied bombers being lost to the German ghters. e Lancasters tted with ABC were specially adapted to carry extra electronic equipment, consisting of a receiver, three 50 watt transmitters and a cathode ray screen. Two seven foot aerials mounted on the top of the fuselage, one below the bomb aimers window, and shorter receiver aerial at the rear, were the only external signs distinguishing the 101 Squadrons aircra . Night a er night these aircra would rendezvous with the main bomber force, and lter into the main stream at carefully spaced intervals. e single skin bombers ew from 500 to 20,000 on these missions with an inside temperature as low -50˚C, the aircrew were tted out in bulky electrically heated suits, eece lined boots and gloves in addition to their parachutes and secret escape paraphernalia. Bomber Command suffered the highest casualty rate of the war, out of a total of 125,000 aircrew, 57,205 were killed, 8,403 were wounded and 9,873 were taken prisoner. eir operations were controversial and sadly resulted in the construction of a memorial commemorating the sacri ce of the aircrews being delayed until 2012.
