Rock the Pier was rst staged in 2018 and repeated in 2019 of 1919; two and a half years later, under the guidance of railway engineer Gerald Yorke, they were propelling subsequently procured bespoke carriages carrying grateful ferry passengers and pier promenaders alike. A birthday cake will be cut during the celebration and free rides along the pier will be available during the a ernoon. With this year’s special signi cance there will be much more happening over the weekend of 23rd and 24th July. An exhibition of working model railway layouts will be presented on behalf of HPHA by the Romsey & District Railway Modellers Society at the Hythe & Dibden Community Centre in Brintons Lane, Hythe from 10.30am until 4.30pm. Admission will be free but donations to HPHA will be welcome. e volunteers from the Hythe Shed (at the Pier) who have restored both the carriages used on the rst run along the pier 100 years ago will be on hand at their workshop on Hythe Quay to talk about the trials and tribulations behind their stunning renovation work. Hythe Quay will also host exhibitions from the Brighton based Vokes Railway, the world’s oldest electric railway dating from 1883 and the Romsey Signal Box dating from ten years earlier. Historic Hythe Pier and Ferry artefacts will also be on display as will the Christmas Fire Engine and a magni cently restored vintage fuel tanker vehicle. e Hythe Quay part of the Centenary celebration will continue on Sunday, when in addition to the Saturday attractions there will be model railway layouts including Chris Rennie’s remote controlled Hythe Pier locomotive. ere will also be music from Frontline and the Melody Makers, a food outlet and for souvenirs of the special occasion; HPHA will be present with a merchandising stall. Parking will be free in Hythe’s NFDC car parks on Saturday 23rd July, whilst many of Hythe’s shops will also open on Sunday. Before the main event there will be a ceremony to mark the centenary of the opening of the Hythe Pier Railway, the world’s oldest electric train continuously operating on a pier, at the end of July 1922. Prior to its inception, ferry passengers had to walk the 640 metres long pier to reach the boats to Southampton. omas Percy, then owner of the boats and the pier, spotted the locomotives, that had been built for use in First World War munitions factories, in a post-war redundant plant catalogue, thinking them ideal for a pier tramway. An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of di erent ethnic backgrounds.
