On the 7th of September the theme for our meeting was more music and friendships. We were treated to a presentation from Chris Legrande about Vienna, its architecture and musical delights. Chris played popular classical music by Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauss Senior to accompany the slides. Initially, until they went their separate ways, they composed a waltz per day. Chris played many well-known musical pieces by Strauss Senior and Junior (all Stauss Snr’s children were actively discouraged from music as they were growing up). Johann Strauss Junior went on to play at the infamous Vienna Opera House, and his music changed from waltz to a more operetta style. Edward Stauss developed a di erent style of music and mainly played in churches. Later Joseph Haydon and Wolfgang Mozart initially played voluntarily at St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. Mozart became director of music there. Chris highlighted the many famous, historic, musical links to the city with the most beautiful and well-known classical music. A er the presentation, Nikki and her team of refreshment ladies provided us with hot drinks, homemade Viennese whirls (by Nikki), and apple strudel – truly scrumptious! BLACKFIELD FLOWER CLUB Members were pleased to be back a er the summer break and welcomed Claire DeLemonge, a newly quali ed Wessex and Jersey demonstrator from Hampshire. e title of her demonstration was ‘Food Glorious Food’. e rst arrangement featured the base of a pizza box. Laurel provided the outline before adding three columns of rosemary to represent the pencil trees in Italy. Green Anatasia chrysanthemums were added to the rst column, white Avalanche roses to the second and red germinis to the third to interpret the Italian ag. Gold small chrysanthemums were used for the cheese. A grey urn was used for a triangle arrangement depicting a fruit crumble. Ivy and ruscus were inserted before adding green small chrysanthemums, dark red carnations, Picasso calla lilies (white with a purple centre), apples on sticks and dried alliums to represent the crumble. Jelly came next with an arrangement in a preserving jar. Fatsia and aspidistra leaves were added together with mauve and purple Santini chrysanthemums, white lisianthus and pink and white germinis. A second arrangement was placed on a white stand to complete this design. e last arrangement interpreted a lemon cake. Lemons and limes had been placed in a preserving jar with a whisk attached. Ruscus was added. White stocks, white Avalanche roses, yellow spray roses and some leather leaf fern were inserted in the jar. An Oasis pad was used for the cake with the same owers plus some gypsophila. A cup and saucer completed this design. At the end of the demonstration Mary Go , Life President, was presented with a gi from the Club as she will shortly be moving to Sussex. Mary has been a valuable member of the club for 33 years serving on the committee as vice chairman and chairman.
