I read all the messages out to her. • Creating flowers for her late Majesty The Queen for Edmund de Rothschild, all the Norleywood School children were invited, one presented a posy of roses and freesia’s to her at Exbury Gardens. Two posies for Princess Anne were made. • It was a great honour to do the funeral flowers for the late Mauldwin Drummond, Tracey and I created a large ‘coat of arms’ in the Drummond colours, putting it on a special coach driven by 4 grey horses, people lined the road on the way to Fawley Church, with all the Cadland staff walking behind the coach. • Giving back to charity has been very important to me, I once abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower – it seemed the next step after jumping from a plane! £5000 was raised and donated to the Cancer unit at the General Hospital in Southampton”. Sandra adds: “A big thank you goes to my son Anthony, daughter Tracey and my wonderful husband of 55 years, who have all been there to help when I needed it. Concerned for the welfare of the hoglets, Mike carried them to a leaf pile opposite the car park by a wall. On returning home that a ernoon he emailed East Boldre Hedgehog Rescue with details of what had happened. Louise Godden from East Boldre Hedgehog Rescue saw the email the following morning – far too long she thought for the hoglets to have survived. As she needed to go shopping anyway, Louise set o for Waitrose in Hythe with only a glimmer of hope of nding any of the hoglets. The John Lewis 3! Unbelievably she found 2 of the hoglets were on the grass area near piles of leaves where Mike had put them for their safety.  ey were very small and should have still been with their Mum, as she would feed them herself until they were big enough to go it alone. e following day Louise’s friend was coming to visit her and decided to drive past Waitrose car park just in case the others were there. One was on the same grass area and was quickly reunited with the other two hoglets. Sadly, despite going back every day to look, the fourth hoglet never appeared. e other ‘John Lewis 3’ were very glad to have food, water and a warm place to sleep. Since they have been at East Boldre Hedgehog Rescue, the hoglets who have been aptly named John, Lewis and Rose, have already doubled in weight and have settled well into their temporary home. Once they grow big enough they will eventually be returned to the wild. Mike and his wife Yvonne have been to visit the hoglets and donated a bag of cat food to help feed all the hedgehog patients at East Boldre Hedgehog Rescue. Louise comments: “Thank you Mike for saving them!” Market Sellers Summer Party Raises Over £100 e stall holders at Hythe’s Indoor Arts and Cra s Market recently held a summer party to raise money for two charities. Following months of preparations and mounting excitement, the yachts cast o their lines to the cheers of the crowd lining the edge of the marina in the heart of the city of Southampton, before making their way up Southampton Water to the start of the retro edition of the iconic race. At 1pm, veteran sailor and fellow circumnavigator Sir Chay Blyth started the competing boats from the Royal Yacht Squadron line in the Solent, just in front of the historic yacht club on the Isle of Wight. Onboard vessels of all sizes, including Britain’s largest working steamship, Shieldhall, throngs of well-wishers accompanied the eet along the western reaches of the Solent towards the Needles before sounding a nal ‘bon voyage’ as the crews headed towards the horizon on their epic ocean-going adventure. “What an amazing sight to witness, 14 teams recreating history, stepping back in time and setting off around the world on a grand adventure in the spirit of the original 1973 Whitbread,” said Don McIntyre, Ocean Globe Race Founder and Sponsor. “This McIntyre Ocean Globe is a dream come true for all the sailors involved. The past weeks at MDL’s Ocean Village have been a fitting tribute and fun time to celebrate MDL’s own 50th anniversary, so thanks for the memories and support bringing the OGR back to the UK and see you in about eight months.” e competitors have no GPS, no high-tech equipment, and no computers onboard. e crews will navigate using only a sextant, charts and the stars, as the competitors did in the early Whitbread races. Six of the boats competing have taken part in one or more of the past Whitbread races, the most notable being Tracy Edwards’ Farr 58 Maiden. In 1990, Tracy triumphantly brought home the rst ever all-female Whitbread crew onboard Maiden to Ocean Village Marina. In this edition, Maiden again set sail with an all-female crew, but with new purpose – to highlight the work of e Maiden Factor Foundation, a charity started by Tracy to support communities to enable girls into education, helping them to reach their full potential and create better futures for all. Tim Mayer, MDL’s Sales and Marketing Director, comments: “We have been delighted to host the Ocean Globe Race crews and the Race Village here at our Ocean Village Marina in Southampton. We wish them all the best of luck with this challenge of a lifetime and look forward to welcoming each and every one of them back to Ocean Village in April, where the winner will be crowned during our South Coast and Green Tech Boat Show.” e nish of the Ocean Globe Race will be at Ocean Village Marina, with the prize giving held during MDL’s South Coast and Green Tech Boat Show, 19th -21st April 2024. e crews are expected to nish between the 1st and 10th April 2024. Young carers look a er disadvantaged family members with physical and mental impairments before going to school, each day and again on their return home. ere is little time for school learning and homework, normal social development is compromised, and they may have little opportunity to take part in a er school activities or to build friendships with others. In essence they are denied the opportunity to make happy childhood memories and build brighter futures for themselves. is is the mission of the Honeypot Children’s Charity, which provides residential respite breaks and ongoing Wrap-Round support services to young carers aged 5-12. Locally this is from Honeypot House, just outside Black eld where volunteer carpenter Derrick Young plays a critical role in creating a child-friendly and safe environment for the children to explore, play and relax with new friends. Since January 2019 Derrick has built and maintained a range of outdoor equipment both at Honeypot House and for fundraising events in the community, including an oak gazebo picnic area, benches and seating for the grounds, a Honeypot market cart for community events, as well as wooden items to sell on the cart, giant coloured pencils for outside the art studio, signposts to help the children navigate the site and updating the John Spencer, President of Highcli e on Sea Rotary Club 2022-2023, who chose e Honeypot Children’s Charity as his charity to support over the last year, commented: “I was so impressed to see all Derrick’s work at Honeypot House. He willingly provides materials and time from his own resources without recompense, seeking no acknowledgement but taking pleasure in the excellence of his work and in the children’s joy in an environment that he contributes to. This is why I felt that Highcliffe on Sea Rotary Club should recognise his contribution to the undoubted success of ‘Honeypot House’ and the Charity as a whole and award him an external Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award.” Derrick was surprised to receive this honour and commented: “I originally joined Honeypot as an ambassador for fundraising for the Charity, which I still am, but I realised I could do things around the site which would take a lot for us to fundraise for, so I get enjoyment from both sides of my volunteering. I enjoy being involved with Honeypot because of the ethos of the Charity and the staff are so welcoming and appreciative of support. When I go to Honeypot House I love seeing the young carers playing and having fun, that’s what it’s pond dipping platform and bridge to ensure it meets Health & Safety Standards. Derrick has also project managed the interior refurbishment of bedrooms and bathrooms. is has all contributed signi cantly to the warm, friendly and creative environment that young carers enjoy supported by Honeypot’s professional staff, leading to an improved developmental outcome for the children, both physically and mentally, through learning new skills, developing social contacts, and feeling less isolated. Page 16 • The HERALD • 5th October 2023 v SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES v Waterside Network Group: Members Focus by Simon Chadwick This issue’s trusted member of the Waterside Network Group is LW Repairs. If you’re a mobile phone or tablet owner then there’s a very reasonable chance you already know Lewis Watson of LW Repairs. e biggest problem presented by our hand-held devices is that they’re always at hand, which means we drop them, spill things on them, and clog up the charging ports. We also use them a lot, which means they’re constantly being charged, One of the most common problems I come across is when a customer has attempted to clean their carpet themselves with a shop-bought cleaning product. Most o -the-shelf products you can buy use hydrogen peroxide as a bleaching agent. In the right hands these can be used e ectively to clean and remove stains. However, in the wrong hands it can be disastrous. People unwittingly pour it on, then rub and scrub, but don’t extract or rinse. is means the chemical remains within the carpet and keeps on working long a er the event, causing damage to the carpet. Top Tip: Caring For Your Carpet by Craig Sly, Enviroclean Hampshire Consequently, it’s not the chemical that is the problem – it’s the fact that it’s le sat on the carpet when it should have been removed. e moral of this tale is to be wary of shop bought carpet cleaning products. If you’re not con dent in using them correctly then the safest solution is to contact a professional if you are in any doubt. You can see examples of Enviroclean Hampshire’s cleaning at: www.envirocleanhampshire. co.uk or you can contact me directly on: 07485 793 197.
