By 2050, one in four of us will be over 65. Alongside this demographic shi comes a surge in chronic conditions - chief among them diabetes, which now a ects more than 4.4 million people in the UK. e dangers of diabetes are well known: blindness, kidney disease, cardiovascular problems. But there’s another complication that rarely makes the headlines - hearing loss. Around 12 million people in the UK already live with hearing loss, and that number is expected to rise sharply in the coming decades. What many don’t realise is that diabetes doubles the risk. Persistently high blood sugar damages tiny blood vessels and nerves in the inner ear, impairing our ability to process sound. e result is not just mu ed conversations, but reduced independence, social isolation, and even faster cognitive decline. The combination of ageing and diabetes creates a perfect storm. Imagine being asked to manage a complex condition but struggling to hear your GP’s advice. Or missing an important phone call because of untreated hearing loss. ese small but signi cant barriers add up, making it harder for people to stay on top of their health and maintain their quality of life. Despite this, hearing checks are rarely part of diabetes care in Britain. Patients are urged to get their eyes and feet examined regularly, but their ears? Too o en ignored. is blind spot in our healthcare system is costing people more than just their hearingit’s affecting their ability to live well and independently. At Specsavers, we believe hearing should be considered an essential part of managing longterm health conditions. Routine hearing checks could be easily added to annual diabetes reviews, with community audiology clinics ready to provide support. Early detection means people can access solutions sooner - whether that’s hearing aids, assistive devices, or simple communication strategies tailored to their lifestyle. Dr Nel Govender, Hearcare Director at Specsavers Southampton City Centre and Hythe, has over 25 years of global audiology experience and specialises in hearing loss linked to complex health conditions. Her expert, compassionate care ensures every patient receives a personalised hearing solution that ts their life. As she o en says, “Preserving hearing means preserving independence and dignity.” As the UK prepares for the twin challenges of an ageing population and rising diabetes rates, we must not allow hearing loss to remain the “forgotten complication.” Recognising and addressing this link is not just good healthcare - it’s common sense.
