MDL Marinas Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Iconic Hythe Marina Village MDL Marinas was proud to mark the 40th anniversary of Hythe Marina Village, the UK’s rst purpose-built marina village, with a weekend of celebrations at the end of September. A landmark development when it opened in 1985, Hythe Marina Village remains one of MDL’s agship locations. Situated on the western shore of Southampton Water, it o ers a unique combination of a 206-berth marina, vibrant waterside homes, restaurants, shops and a boutique hotel. Inspired by Port Grimaud on the Côte d’Azur, Hythe Marina Village was a pioneering concept in the UK, combining luxury waterside living with rst-class boating facilities. e development was o cially launched on 4th December 1984, when Sir Christopher Cockerell, inventor of the hovercra , laid the rst brick. Its gala opening the following year attracted national headlines when the rst boats through its lock included actor Arthur Lowe’s Edwardian steam yacht Amazon and Richard Branson’s recordbreaking speed boat Atlantic Challenger. Hythe Marina Village also featured prominently as one of the lming locations for the BBC drama Howards’ Way, showcasing its marina facilities and adding to the glamour of the series. “Hythe Marina Village is a signature development in MDL’s portfolio and a true icon of British marina design,” says Tim Mayer, MDL’s Sales and Marketing Director. “When it opened 40 years ago, it redefined what a marina could be. Today, it’s not only a destination for boaters but a thriving community and lifestyle hub. We’re delighted to celebrate this milestone with our berth holders, residents and the local community who have all played such a vital role in its success.” As part of the anniversary celebrations, Hythe Marina Association organised two special community events. e celebrations began with a Hog Roast for the Marina’s residents on Saturday 20th September and culminated in the weekend’s highlight – a Sail Past Spectacular on Sunday 21st September. A colourful parade of boats set out in convoy from Hythe Marina, sailing a buoyed course in Southampton Water. With vessels dressed in style, live commentary, prizes, food and drink stalls, and live music creating a vibrant celebration. “It’s a privilege to manage such a unique and historic marina, where boating and community come together in such a special way,” says Debbie Scott, Marina Manager at Hythe Marina Village. “The 40th anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the marina’s incredible history while looking forward to the next chapter.” With easy access to the Solent, exceptional boatyard facilities and a rich blend of dining and leisure options including e Boathouse and Indian Kitchen, Hythe Marina Village continues to deliver an unrivalled marina lifestyle four decades on. With a combined age of 148 years, there was high demand for tickets to board both Clyde built vessels, with the sail together giving passengers on each vessel the ideal viewing platform to watch and wave to the other. By 4pm Shieldhall was in position setting a straight course from the Solent Forts due west. Waverley having been o Bembridge on the far east of the Isle of Wight came steaming up at full speed. With her passengers all on deck to see Shieldhall Waverley duly announced her arrival at the event with Shieldhall responding in similar fashion. To begin with Waverley steamed down Shieldhall’s starboard side paddling ahead and then falling in behind her. Waverley then steamed down Shieldhall’s port side giving passengers on both sides of each vessel the opportunity to see the other steamer. Seafin (1961) operated by Seafin Luxury Charters and Solent Cat (2000) operated by Solent Cruises also took part with each taking turns to steam between Waverley and Shieldhall giving their respective passengers views at close quarters. A er much tooting and waving there was one more addition to the event in the form of a coastguard helicopter which ew close above Shieldhall to conduct a training exercise much to the pleasure of passengers aboard Shieldhall. A er about 50 minutes it was time for Waverley to set course for Yarmouth while Shieldhall made her way directly back to her home berth in Southampton Docks. Martin Phipps, Chairman of e Shieldhall Charity, noted: “We were thrilled to meet up with the Waverley and exchange greetings with much sounding of whistles and sirens. The weather held for us and we have had some wonderful feedback from passengers. Timetables allowing, it would be wonderful to think that this could become an annual gathering in the Solent, with the support of other historic vessels.” e sailing and ‘steam together’ event was the nale to a special year for Shieldhall which celebrated her 70th Anniversary. Originally built to carry treated sewage from Shieldhall and Dalmuir down the River Clyde for disposal in deeper waters around Garroch Head Shieldhall has now been operated in preservation for over 30 years – a longer period of time than her original function. Both steamships rely on generous supporters to help keep them in steam and operating. Unlike Waverley however, Shieldhall is entirely run by volunteers and will operate at sea for around 25-30 days a year. By volunteering your time and vehicle, you will be o ering a vital service to adults in your community. You must have had a full UK driving licence for a minimum of 5 years and produce valid insurance documents for the vehicle and where applicable a current MOT Certi cate. You will be asked weekly to con rm your availability and fuel costs are reimbursed monthly on submission of a mileage log at a generous rate of 50p per mile. Lawrence (1951 – 2022) was a preeminent artist whose work spanned genres of still life, portraiture, landscape, religious iconography and grand themes such as Dante’s Inferno. His works appeared in many international group shows and was the subject of a number of exhibitions during his lifetime. is retrospective, the largest of its kind at the Palais, is the rst to show the full spectrum of his career and is running until 31st October. is exhibition celebrates the evolution of Lawrence’s approach over ve decades of intensive practice. e Lawrence estate and the Palais des Vaches are working together to bring this vast collection, much of which is unseen until now, to Nick and Caroline de Rothschild’s spacious gallery at the edge of the New Forest, where Lawrence himself lived and worked near for most of his life. Known for successful portraiture, his works included sitters Yehudi Menhuin, Seamus Heaney, Sir Ian McKellen, Roger McGuinn, Nigel Mansell and Rt Rev Hassan Dehqani-Ta i, among others. A highlight came when he painted Francis Bacon, who promised to reciprocate by painting Lawrence’s own likeness a er the pair became good friends. Landscape paintings form a large part of Lawrence’s oeuvre, focusing in particular on Saudi Arabia and his home in the New Forest. During the 90s, Lawrence spent time in the middle east, focusing his practice on the notion of a ‘barren landscape’ for his Desert series - his oodlit palm trees, expressionist dunes and bright skies sing out of the canvas. ese landscapes were so di erent from those of his homeland, yet they became ones he loved and painted multiple times. Art historian Susan Gray says in her essay on Lawrence that in one such painting, e Desert Explored: Impressions of the Desert (1999), ‘the terrain is brought to life through an expressionistic, deeply outlined rendering of the dune’s near slope, reminiscent of Van Gogh’s istles by the Roadside (1881).’ Known for drawing on classical antiquity, religion and literary themes, Lawrence’s series of works inspired by grand notions and ideology are many and varied. roughout his career he returned to Dante’s Inferno as inspiration for a body of over forty paintings: his technical mastery echoing the canon of great masters, particularly focusing on Dante’s interpretation of good and evil. In the 90s Lawrence turned to Wagner and his opera Tannhauser, employing the medium of etching, last used when he studied at Ruskin School of Art, Oxford. Gray writes of these works that, ‘Lawrence made some of his most emotionally powerful work. Similar to a Francisco Goya etching, we are drawn into their tragedy as if it is our own.’ Lawrence’s monumental e Last Supper (1994) was cra ed upon a huge number of studies, in which friends and family posed in robes. His series e Stations of the Cross was inspired by the restoration of the display of religious imagery in the Byzantine Anthony Lawrence painting his Nigel Mansell portrait in his new forest home studio, 1992 Continued on page 19
