Last year, Mechanix students restored a Hillman Minx, which is currently on display at Beaulieu Motor Museum and has featured on their social media posts. is year, students will restore a customised 1973 aircooled Volkswagen Beetle. Following feedback from last year’s course, leaders have made some changes. Previously, students had attended the course two evenings a week, with a life skills session and a session in the garage, each for 90 minutes. is year, students are divided into a Monday and ursday group, meaning they and the volunteer leaders are able to manage their time more e ectively. In addition, there is a greater focus on practical mechanics. James Willett, Youth Minister at St Andrew’s Church, Dibden, says: “We had a great first session in the Coffee House, and everyone is keen to get into the garage to start work. The students and their parents enjoyed seeing the vehicle at Shawfix Autos and this year’s Mechanix have been assigned their steel-toed work boots and overalls, ready to restore the car. By the end of the course, they will practise searching for a Church’s practical outreach work to local young people. e age range is Years 10 and 11, ages 14-16. Previous mechanical experience is not required. Mechanix is open to male and female applicants and the young people are challenged to bring cars up to MOT level during evening courses at Shaw x Autos and St Andrew’s Centre. Students use manuals as their guide, as well as the expertise provided by volunteers and gain experience of MOT test procedures, car skills and life skills. Members of sta at Shaw x donate their time and expertise, as do a number of church volunteers. Previous and current sponsors and supporters include J Haynes, ExxonMobil, Beaulieu Motor Museum, Shaw x Autos and Draper Tools. Planning for the rst course began in 2016 and was run in 2017. At previous exhibitions, members of the public have been asked to vote for their choice of ‘Best In Show’, but as a break from tradition to mark the signi cant event, this year’s ‘Best In Show’ will be selected by Hampshire’s very own professional artist, Daphne Ellman, who was the originator of the Chilworth Art Group twenty ve years ago. e ‘Best In Show’ painting will be on view from the rst day of the exhibition and, unless otherwise requested by the artist, it will be available for purchase by any member of the public. Also available for purchase will be a wide selection of wood-turned items, cra ed in local woods by various members of the group. is will be a unique opportunity for members of the public to speak directly with some of the artists and to nd out more about the group and its activities.
