Trevor Guymer revisited the New Forest (East) Probus Club for their September meeting to give an interesting and well illustrated talk on ‘Clouds’. During his talk, Trevor explained with various slides how future weather information can be interpreted from various cloud formations. Cloud formations were rst identi ed by a Pharmacist Lake Howard in 1802 using Latin based descriptions. He identi ed three basic types of Clouds: Cirrus (Curl), Cummulus (Heap and Stratus Layer) with subsequent cloud descriptions being a variant. Medium high clouds produce a convective e ect on an approximately 1/100 gradient, which is frequently used by glider pilots. Trevor concluded his talk with the developments of a hurricane. A hurricane essentially requires: a warm sea 24 to 30°C, not too much wind and not too close to the Equator. A typical travelling speed is between 40 and 80 Km/hr. e Club is always ready to welcome visitors or new members, anyone interested is requested to contact the Secretary, Allen Ennew on 023 8184 1697.
