Bin it? No way! Transition Lymington community group are organising another Repair Café in Lymington on Saturday 9th November . At Lymington Community Centre on New Street from 9.30am till 12.30pm, volunteer repairers will be available to help people try to repair their items. People are invited to take along their broken items from home including clothes, phones, electrical items and bikes. Materials will also be on hand for people to have a go at xing items themselves. ere will be no charge for this, but donations towards the hire of the hall will be welcome. Sta from Figgures Cycles shop will also be o ering free bike safety checks. e Repair Café will be running alongside a ‘Jean Genie’; an ‘upcycling’ event, also run by Transition Lymington. Several sewing machines will be set up for people to have a go at making something new from old pairs of jeans and other materials. Refreshments will be available too. By promoting repairs, Transition Lymington wants to help reduce mountains of waste. is is absolutely necessary, according to Grace Brennan from the group. “We throw away so much stuff in the UK. Even things which practically have nothing wrong with them, and which could easily be used again after a simple repair. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten that they can have things repaired. Repair Café wants to change all that. Repairs can save money and resources, and can help minimise CO2 emissions. By running a Repair Café people can discover that repairing things can be fun and often quite easy.” the Repair Café will hopefully put local people in touch with each other, and maybe discover that a lot of know-how and practical skills can be found close to home. Grace says: “If you repair a bike, a CD player or a pair of trousers together with a previously unfamiliar neighbour, you look at that person in a different light the next time you run into them on the street. Jointly making repairs can lead to pleasant contacts in the neighbourhood.” Grace explains: “Our first Repair Café earlier in the year was very successful and people have been asking us to run another. We are hoping to run the café every year so we are always looking for more people to help as volunteer repairers. Please get in touch if you think you can help on our Facebook page; search for ‘Lymington Repair Café’ and send us a message.” e Repair Café concept arose in the Netherlands in 2009, and was formulated by Martine Postma, at the time an Amsterdam-based journalist/publicist. In 2010, she started the Repair Café Foundation (see Repaircafe.org). is foundation provides support to local groups around the world wishing to start their own Repair Café. e foundation also supports the Repair Café in Lymington.
