Five days a er the event, donations are still pouring in and being counted. On Saturday 21st September, as the sun set, over 700 supporters of the life-saving Charity lit up Southampton Common with a sea of neon paint and glow in the dark fancy dress. Participants of all ages and abilities skipped, jumped, danced and walked their way around the 5km route. HIOWAA Events Fundraiser, Nicole Davies, said: “Dash in the Dark proved to be so popular that we are already planning how to make it bigger and better next year. Hundreds of participants turned out to show their support, dressed in colourful tutus and leg warmers, and we are staggered by the amount they raised. We owe them a huge thank you.” Dash in the Dark gave everyone the opportunity to get involved, with Jane, from Locks Heath, saying: “The night was so much fun, and as it was in the dark, those who are self-conscious about running had nothing to worry about. I will definitely be taking part again next year.” For more information, and for others way to raise money for HIOWAA, visit: www.hiowaa.org Second Childrens Book for Local Writer Steve Boyce was born in Totton and then moved to Holbury in 1968. He has remained local ever since. When Steve le school he wanted to be a Cartoonist. He supplied the Southern Evening Echo with cartoons for a short while, and as a hobby tried his hand at animation. He later attended Salisbury College of Art. Following on from this Steve then became a postman and is a well- known face around Holbury. He loves metal detecting and takes an interest in the local history. Cornelius Cone and Friends came about as a result of seeing a sign on the M27 that mentioned a Cone Helpline, this appealed to his sense of humour as he imagined the cones calling the helpline number. Years went by, but then a window of opportunity unfolded and which meant Steve could now have his rst book published. He has now written a second book, continuing the theme with Cornelius. As well as writing these books, he has also illustrated them. e books deal in a light, fun way the importance of road safety, e n v i r o n m e n t a l issues and other topics. Steve is currently working on his third book – the storyline features vegetarian dinosaurs and a postman. Steve said: “I am very pleased that the books have received such good feedback, they are aimed at young children, but I have also had a positive response from parents and other adults who enjoy reading them too!”
