Exbury Gardens Steam Railway runs through the leafy Summer Lane Garden at the 200-acre New Forest visitor attraction and this year is celebrating its coming of age as well as lots more people hopping aboard. With Exbury already seeing the best spring owering season in living memory, a record number of visitors has been passing through its gates, most of whom are now taking a railway ride. Robin Savill, head of operations at Exbury Gardens said: “Visitors love getting the chance to experience the sights and sounds of a working steam railway, and it’s wonderful that after 21 years it’s proving more popular than ever.” Here’s ve reasons to visit Exbury Gardens Steam Railway this season: 1. e 1½-mile railway, named the Rhododendron Line, boasts three engines and ten carriages, all named a er members of the Rothschild family, which embark from Exbury Central station, a replica of Aviemore station in Scotland. e railway even has a quaint engine shed and turntable. 2. e railway meanders past Exbury’s renowned rock garden; Dragon y Pond where you can spot these beautiful creatures on sunny days; Domesday Yew and American Garden before steaming through a curved tunnel modelled on the famous Gothic folly, the Clayton Tunnel in West Sussex. 3. You’ll be in good company! Over the years the railway has welcomed members of the royal family aboard, with e Queen visiting twice, riding on the footplate at the front of the train. 4. Like the rest of the gardens, the steam railway is dog-friendly, so well-behaved dogs on a short lead can ride in a carriage with their owners. 5. Steam railway events for 2022 include the Halloween Ghost Train (24th-30th October) and Christmas Weekends in December. Dave Giles was appointed railway foreman of Exbury Gardens Steam Railway this year a er running a carpet cleaning business for 33 years. As a model engineering enthusiast, he had helped on the railway over the years but now has his dream job. He said: “It’s great to see how happy visitors, of all ages, are when they ride on the train. Steam trains just make people smile. We also give them a short history of the gardens during the journey, so visitors learn interesting facts and anecdotes about Exbury, and when they get off the train they always tell us how friendly and knowledgeable the staff are.” Exbury Gardens Steam Railway was opened in 2001 and was the brainchild of the late Leo de Rothschild, who was passionate about railways. He oversaw the building of the railway and tightened the last coach screw on the track on 3rd August 2001. Steam engine trials were then carried out to ensure everything ran smoothly and in May 2002, on Leo’s 75th birthday, the railway was o cially launched. It proved such a success, in 2017 it was extended from 1¼ miles to 1½ miles.
