Kate and Marilyn set o back in April on the 24th coinciding with World Veterinary Day with a view to raising £5000 to be split between two charities close to Kate’s heart; Vetlife and Pets as erapy, 3 months on and the duo have exceeded their target raising over £16,000! e journey hasn’t always been plain sailing but Kate has built up a special bond with Marilyn, they instinctively understand each other and have kept each other going. eir spirits have also been raised along the way with the generosity of strangers donating food and drink, places to stay and company along the trek. Kate comments: “We’ve had some scary moments, the traffic across Britain is concerning, the speeds fast and the roads much busier than I ever expected. In the early days, with endless wind and rain, and very difficult terrain and tracks, it would have been easy to give up. When I look back over the challenge and the ride, I don’t think I will ever forget the stunning landscapes, the mountains and hills, valleys and rivers, and the dramatic skies. And perhaps above all else, the kindness of strangers, I have found the world really is full of kind people, who will genuinely put themselves out to help you in all sorts of ways. Some have kindly delivered feed and water for Marilyn and occasionally and spontaneously cake and a G&T for me! Thank you so much to everyone who connected with me in person or digitally, it has meant so much and it will be something we will never forget!.” If you’d like to donate visit: www.justgiving.com/team/ gbvettrek Kate and Marilyn at Lands’ End

For over 50 years the animals at Barry’s Farm on Frost Lane in Hythe have been entertaining local children and adults. e menagerie of animals including Jacob the donkey, alpacas Prince and Fudge, Daisy and Clover the goats, Maggie the pig and all the ducks, geese and chickens certainly bring a smile to your face when you visit them. Sadly due to owner Barry’s ill health the farm is in need of help both physically and nancially to enable the farm to continue. A crowdfunding page was set up by Steve Green to raise £2,000 for the farm recently with the hope of funding the refurbishment of the duck pond. Work started on the pond in July, but just a er it had been drained ready to inspect the liner, Barry’s beloved donkey Toby was taken ill very suddenly and sadly had to be put to sleep. e money unfortunately had to be used towards Toby’s vet bill. e Herald have contacted some local businesses with the hope of funding the new pond - we will keep you updated with progress. We know that times are hard but if you can spare some money to help fund feed and future care for the animals there is now a collection tin in e Herald O ce in Hythe where you can make a cash donation. Alternatively you can make a donation online via the go fund me page: gofund. me/8a5da09e e cards by artist and farm volunteer Christine Jones are still available for sale in the o ce too priced at £2 with all proceeds going to the farm. If you are an animal lover and have some time to spare to help look a er the animals Barry’s family are looking to expand their team of committed volunteers. e animals are all let out at 8.30am every morning and put away every evening at 6.30pm, if you think you could help please contact Sarah at the Herald (sbartlett@herald-publishing. co.uk) and she will put you in touch with Barry’s family to arrange a time for you to meet the animals and learn the ropes. Barry and his family are grateful for any help they receive. As a community we can all play a part in helping Barry’s Farm continue and thrive for future generations to enjoy. For updates about Barry’s Farm you can follow them on Facebook: www. f a c e b o o k . c om/ p r o f i l e . php?id=100065781180880 Maggie enjoying a bath! Jacob, Fudge and Prince

Prior to its inception at the end of July 1922, ferry passengers had to walk the 640 metre long pier to reach the boats to Southampton. omas Percy, then owner of the boats and the pier, spotted the locomotives that had been built for use in First World War munitions factories, in a post-war redundant plant catalogue, thinking them ideal for a pier tramway. He put in a bid at the end of 1919; two and a half years later, under the guidance of railway engineer Gerald Yorke, they were propelling subsequently procured bespoke carriages carrying grateful ferry passengers and pier promenaders alike. Organised by the Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA), the celebrations kicked o with a short ceremony conducted by HPHA chairman Anthony Smith during which the 16307 locomotive arrived and was brought to a standstill no more than an inch from its visiting sibling locomotive 16303 (as detailed in the 427 Herald). A birthday cake was cut to a rendition of “Happy Birthday”. Shortly a er the Promenade came to life with the start of Rock the Train entertaining the crowds brightening up the event. As well as the musical entertainment visitors had the opportunity to ride the pier train and visit exhibitions featuring historic Hythe Pier and Ferry artefacts as well as exhibits from the world’s oldest electric railway - Volks Electric Railway in Brighton and the Romsey Signal Box. Romsey & District Railway Modellers Society also set up an exhibition of working model railway layouts at the Community Centre. Vintage vehicles from the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu including a fuel tanker and a charabanc were also on display at the foot of the pier along with the Waterside Christmas Fire Engine. Birthday Cake (Photo Alan Titheridge) with seven hours of live music including local bands Trav Cats, WireJD, When Harri met Alli, REMbrandt, Magikats and the Soulcatchers. is year’s free music festival rebranded from ‘Rock the Pier’ to ‘Rock the Train’ for the centenary was kindly sponsored by e Scratch Project, e Lord Nelson, Maples, General Estates, PPLPRS and Zillwoods Signs. Initial survey and design work is now complete allowing the li ing of existing track, conductor rail and points at the shore end of the pier to be started, probably at the beginning of September. As previously reported in the Herald a new platform will be built as a part of the project. is work is essential to preserve and extend the life of Hythe’s Guinness Record holding electric pier train which rst ran along the pier in July 1922. HPHA will continue to protect, preserve, restore and redevelop the pier, associated buildings and the unique railway for public bene t. Despite the di cult times brought about by the pandemic over the past two years, HPHA have restored the railway carriage and Anthony Smith receiving cheque from Jill Tomlin and Dan Poole of the Dibden Allotment Fund with New Forest East MP Julian Lewis in attendance (Photo: Alan Titheridge) Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) proudly put a second restored train carriage back in service on the Hythe Pier Railway just in time for its Centenary Celebration in July. e project took almost a year with the bodywork being carried out by volunteers from the Hythe Men’s Shed at the Pier and the undercarriage by engineers from Blue Funnel Ferries. Some of the original timber was able to be retained but the bodywork needed new frames, new skins and replacement glass and electrics. All of the seating and door furniture was, a er cleaning up, reused. Built by the Baguley Car Company under Drewry Cars order number 1048 (also known as carriage 1), the carriage arrived in Hythe in June 1922 at a cost of £375, entering service without ceremony towards the end of July. Next up in the HPHA restoration programme is Drewry Cars 1327 (carriage 2). is is the rst of the driving carriages that arrived in May 1923 and transported King George VI along the pier during a visit prior in D-Day in May 1944. tractor unit and has carried out urgent protection and repair work on the pier head buildings. ere is still much to do, with the volunteers working tirelessly to secure the necessary funding. On reaching the Team Wales qualifying score in May 2022 Lucy was delighted to hear in June that she had been selected to join Team Wales at Birmingham 2022. Lucy competed in the individual 10m platform event making it through all the heats to dive in the nal! Talent Squad. During her time at University and since graduating Social Responsibility Award 2021/22 Waterside Primary School Waterside Primary School nominated Abigail (Abi) to receive Hythe & Waterside Rotary’s Social Responsibility Award for this year. Participating schools are asked to nominate a pupil who has gone ‘above and beyond’ in either, or both, their school community or the wider community and a donation is made to a charitable cause by the Club on behalf of the pupil. Abi is a Year 1 pupil who has a sense of responsibility for the environment and is always happy to take action on her own initiative to deal with issues she encounters. A good example of this is that recently, Abi heard a comment about litter in the school grounds and without being asked, set about collecting and disposing of the litter. Abi was presented with her certi cate by Hythe & Waterside Rotarian Tim Parsons at the school’s celebration assembly on the last day of term. Abi is an active member of the Beavers section of the 3rd Dibden Purlieu Scout Group and has asked that the donation goes to them. Opened by Natural England on 3rd August, this easy to follow 52 mile walking route along the Solent coast takes you from Calshot to Portsmouth via Gosport. Allison Potts, Natural England Area Manager, said: “This new trail covers a wealth of unique environments. It includes the unspoiled countryside with its abundance of wildlife. The industrial and bustling maritime Solent beside one of the most densely populated areas on the south coast of England. At a time when the benefits of connecting with nature are clearer than ever. It is fabulous that we are opening up this nearly 52 mile walking route on the banks of the Solent for people to enjoy.” Calshot to Gosport: is route starts at Calshot Spit, a popular beach and water sports location. It is also a natural shelter to the Calshot Nature Reserve where birds like oyster catchers and ringed plover can be seen. Heading northwest towards Hythe, you have sight of the areas industrial heritage – the decommissioned Fawley Power Station and the Fawley Oil Re nery. Once at Hythe waterfront, a short hop on the Hythe Ferry will take you across to Southampton Town Quay, a busy international port with many historic sites. Once you cross the River Itchen, you carry on the route through Woolston and Netley, where you might glimpse a 16th century castle and ruins of the 13th century Abbey. You then pass the Royal Victoria Country Park, which was once the home of the biggest military hospital in the Victorian Empire and a popular tourist attraction. Continuing on to Hamble-le-Rice and through Hamble Common, there are more sites of historical and archaeological interest. ere are remains of the 16th century St Andrews Castle, a 19th century gun battery and a second world war anti-aircra gun emplacement. With low wages and poor harvests, the English countryside was turbulent. Mechanisation of farming, especially horsepowered threshing machines, threatened tenuous livelihoods and was met by strong, sometimes violent, opposition. e rst of many protests occurred in August 1830 in Kent, where a threshing machine was destroyed. Unrest soon spread across England; machines were destroyed, hayricks and other farm property burned. e protests had three targets; the tithe system supporting the Church, the Poor Law guardians, whose power and injustice were despised, and rich tenant farmers, whose low wages kept labourers in poverty. A common feature of the protests, dubbed the Swing Riots, was letters sent to landowners, signed by a ctitious ‘Captain Swing’. e letters would call for increased wages, reduced tithes, and abandonment of the hated threshing machines, threatening damage and violence if their wishes were ignored. ough there was generally little rioting in the Waterside area, there was considerable unrest around Fawley and Exbury in November 1830. In Exbury, John Butcher and James Dickson assaulted John Spedding, forcing him to join a mob; both were quickly sentenced to 6 months’ hard labour. Meanwhile at Fawley, Charles and John Bratcher, Henry and Samuel Bundy, Henry Cavell, Josiah and Robert Cull, Richard and William Lane, Samuel Saunders and John Webb and others rioted, disperse the riot. Speaking for the men, Mr Poulter reminded the court that they, or their ancestors, had recently fought to defend their nation: “… days of war have now ceased, the market for these men is now gone, but do not let us therefore turn them away as worthless persons … Do not let us forget the debt of gratitude we owe them. Do not let us depress that noble spirit that has existed in our peasantry”. A Mr Sewell continued: “A man with five or six children, necessitated to support his family on wages of 9 shillings a week! Could the Jury … suppose that sum sufficient to supply the common wants of nature? If a man saw his family in distress – his children starving – the law of nature then became paramount to the laws of man. Laws were made for the benefit of society, but society never required that one class should starve and others revel in luxury and wealth”. Nonetheless, the accused were given between 3 months and a year’s hard labour. Eventually wages improved somewhat, and the protests faded away, though just a few years later the Tolpuddle Martyrs were forced to act by depressingly similar conditions. assaulting the landowner Lord Cavan and two magistrates trying to A horse-powered threshing machine; unknown author, 1881 Following our article about milk bottle tops in the last edition of e Herald we were contacted by the team at Jubilee Hall in Fawley to say that they have a collection point there. e bottle tops get weighed in and money donated to Naomi House and Jacks Place.
