Lee completed the Marathon in 8 hours 15 minutes, raising an amazing £2,200 for the charity that support families whose children have Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune condition. A charity close to Lee’s heart as his own daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 6 years ago, during an emergency hospital visit. Lee comments: “The marathon was tough! I had contracted Covid in August and never really recovered, which meant I hadn’t trained for 6 weeks and the most I had run in preparation, was 10 miles. By mile 9, my hamstring was tight and hurting. At mile 12, I met my family, who gave me a boost and encouraged me to keep going. I made it over Tower Bridge, and headed towards the Isle of Dogs, and everything just seized up. A friend passed me and encouraged me on, and so I got slower and slower, feeling like I’m walking round in circles at times, feeling sick at mile 21 and texting my wife to say “I can’t do it”, and she reminded me that a) you’ve done it before and can do it again b) there are countless people praying for you and c) it may not feel like it, but you’re nearly there. Which spurred me on for the final 5 miles. I managed to sprint the last few hundred metres, with my family and friends cheering me on from the sides and I earned my medal. Thank you to everyone who supported, or cheered me on when out on training runs. Your support was amazing!” For more information about JDRF please visit: jdrf.org.uk Reverend Lee Davies Spooktastic Hythe Pier Ghost Train For a few hours at Halloween, the world’s oldest continuously operating electric pier train morphed into its spookiest. Hythe’s iconic century old pier railway was possessed by ghosts, ghouls, phantoms and other spirit beings. Huge spiders webs hung from the carriage roofs and a demonic and sinister clown seized the controls from the regular driver. All this delighted the hundreds of local children treated to free rides along the pier as a part of Hythe’s annual Halloween Treat Trail in which local shops and business owners o ered treats to the excited youngsters parading around the village in their scary costumes. Witches on broomsticks ew in the ra ers at the pier entrance haunted by ghosts, where a skeleton named Kevin welcomed anyone who risked the Hythe Ferry Company Zombie Feast. All great fun but with a serious side. All pro ts from the sale of 1,000 treat bags are destined to the local business initiative Hythe Alive, raising funds for Hythe’s Christmas lights. Our mission was to think about a creative task and activity that would engage the bright year 9 girls in our group. We decided to ask the girls to design some new brochures for us – featuring our sustainable Safaris and experiences. Beth (our relationship manager) joined the girls and teachers at the school to give them the tasks to complete. A week later, Beth was invited back for a presentation of their work. We were blown away by our group’s award-winning results! e girls had excelled in their creative e orts, and their presentation of the well-constructed and appealing brochures they had designed for us was delivered with con dence and enthusiasm. Alexandra’s Africa is so pleased to be involved in helping young people gain real experience of work in an environment that wholeheartedly embraces sustainability. Sustainable travel is increasingly becoming an important focus for the younger generation, and this was re ected in their e orts. Well done year 9 girls at South Wilts Grammer – we salute you! Page 16 • The HERALD • 17th November 2022 v SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE HERALD v Waterside Network Group: Member Focus by Simon Chadwick Allow me to introduce you to Mark Chapman of local business Klic-Key. e ‘Klic’ of Klic-Key stands for Keys Locked In Car, although it’s as likely to be lost keys that Klic-Key have to deal with. Mark assists people across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire who have, for some reason or another, got themselves into car trouble. O ering a 24-hour emergency vehicle locksmith service, KlicKey regularly assist the AA, RAC and Green Flag in helping their members gain access to their cars in a non-destructive manner. Klic-Key is an independent company with over 30 years’ experience in the motor trade. It doesn’t have the overheads of the national companies so the savings are passed on to you. Mark is able to travel to wherever you are, whenever you need him. But there’s more to Klic-Key than that. Mark can professionally t dashcams on a separate circuit, and, for those vehicles where they’re not pre-installed, t head units for entertainment systems and upgrade your audio systems too. Bluetooth and handsfree kits are also part of the service. If you’re converting a van, or require light bars and work lamps tted, KlicKey can ensure it’s done safely and correctly, including the installation of a separate power source with split charger so you’re le with a full battery when it comes to starting. ere are two particular bugbears of Mark’s that all car owners should be aware of. Firstly, it’s ensuring you have a working spare key. If you don’t, Mark can make one for you. Secondly, it’s the peril of keyless ignition systems and those that wish to exploit them. Mark recommends, and can provide, Faraday pouches to shield your key’s signals from any ne’erdowells out there. So, for a friendly, polite and professional service, talk to Mark at Klic-Key using the contact details in the featured member box, adjacent.
