Amelia Ashton, the Lieutenant of Hampshire nominated e Honeypot Children’s Charity, to receive one of the trees, which was part of the sculpture, that stood tall outside Buckingham Palace during the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations earlier this year. The living sculpture, designed by Thomas Heatherwick, sought to put the importance of trees at the heart of the historic milestone to celebrate Her Majesty, who planted over 1,500 trees all over the world during her 70-year reign. e trees are now being planted in honour of the late Queen, creating a living legacy around the UK through e Queen’s Green Canopy. On 10th November one of the trees was planted at the Honeypot Children’s Charity’s Honeypot House, by the Lieutenant of Hampshire, Amelia Ashton and Nagindra Chungh, Director of Operations at the Honeypot Children’s Charity. Nagindra was a headteacher for 25 years and believes every child should aim high and have the opportunity to succeed and y in anything they do. e tree takes pride of place by the astroturf where the children play basketball and race on go karts. Simmi Woodwal, CEO Honeypot Children’s Charity comments: “We are so honoured to be chosen for the Queen’s Green Canopy, to commemorate the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II onsite, in our grounds in the beautiful New Forest. Plus, to show the importance of protecting the forests for future generations.” Since 1996 Honeypot has been working to enhance the lives of young carers aged 5-12 years by providing respite breaks and on-going outreach support. ey give young carers a break from demanding and stressful responsibilities at home and provide a safe, nurturing environment where children at risk can develop their full potential. When most of us were enjoying the summer sun and not even thinking about Christmas, a team of mechanical Elves started work on checking the engine to make sure it is t and healthy to cover the many miles across the Waterside this Christmas and Badmintons completed the MOT free of charge. In October, the re engine was expertly cleaned and spruced up by a team of re ghters at Hythe Fire Station and a recruitment event took place to enlist extra Elves to join the Waterside Christmas Fire Engine on its rounds this year collecting money for charity. Edging closer to this year’s unveiling the Waterside Christmas Fire Engine was given a bit of a faceli with new banners thanks to GRS Fleet Graphics Ltd who supplied and tted the new vinyl free of charge. ey have also received generous donations from local councillors, Waterside Women and a local lady who donated £100 to keep the engine on the road. ExxonMobil have recently made a generous donation to the Waterside Christmas Fire Engine and have also supplied selection boxes for the Elves to hand out to children on their rounds. Chief Elf and owner of the Fire Engine, Pat Canning comments: “We are very grateful to everyone who has donated their time and money to help us to get the Fire Engine ready in time to do our rounds this year. We would like to thank ExxonMobil Fawley for its very generous donation which will help us buy a replacement generator to power the lights and music on the Fire Engine. We are sure the Waterside children will also be delighted with their selection boxes which were also part of the donation.” In the run up to Christmas the Waterside Fire Engine will be attending lots of local events and Father Christmas will be travelling around the Waterside in the Fire Engine so listen out for the sirens and Christmas music! Last year the Waterside Christmas Fire Engine raised an amazing £8405.82, with the donations shared between local charities and organisations: Waterside Food Bank, Street Angels, Solent Dolphin (Alison Mc Gregor), National Coast watch (Lepe), Hythe Shed at the Pier, New Forest Guide Dogs for the Blind, Warren Copse, Healthy Haven Garden and Holbury Manor Group. Sta from the estates department at the Fawley site were joined by specialist teams from Veolia and Trant to demolish an old wooden pavilion in the grounds Going, going, gone! The team effort made short shrift of the demolition process. of Waterside Primary School in Hythe during the half-term holiday. e school issued a plea to the local community for help in deconstructing the old and dangerous sheltered structure to enable them to start their plans to build an outdoor classroom funded by New Forest District Council. e outdoor classroom will not only bene t the school but also the wider community as well as local charities which assist families in need by supplying healthy school meals during the holidays to ensure they do not go without a hot meal. Following the appeal, the ExxonMobil estates team rose to the challenge, and it took the team of four workers just a few hours to carefully bring down the structure using a JCB. ey then cleared and tidied up the site using a roll-on roll-o skip provided by Veolia, leaving it ready for the school to begin preparing for the new building which will be constructed next year. Danny Carr, Estates Superintendent at ExxonMobil Fawley, said: “When we heard that the school was looking for a bit of help, we were happy to oblige. It was a real team effort between ourselves and the two contractors and it didn’t take long to bring down safely.” Kerrie Reeves, Business Manager at Waterside Primary added: “We can’t thank the team enough because without them we wouldn’t have been able to proceed with the plans. We secured funding for the new building, but with all the increasing costs, we couldn’t have afforded to get someone in to do the demolition work, so this has really been a lifesaver for us.”

My great-grandfather, eo Osborn Smith, ran his boatbuilding business from Ashlett Mill, also dabbling with all kinds of inventions and other pursuits. By 1909, he had become very interested in powered ight, and had several designs for aeroplanes and a gyroplane, as well as a patent (No. 29067 of 1909) – “Improvements in aerial machines”. When Edwin Moon sailed into Ashlett Creek in his small boat, the ‘Whisper’, looking for someone to help him build an aeroplane, he could hardly have come to a better place. Moon was frequenting the area in any case, because he was courting a Hythe girl, Isabel Madeline Waldron, whom he later married. He had been born in Southampton in 1886, and his uncle, Egbert Moon, owned the Moonbeam Engineering Co. Ltd., based in the city. e company built motor launches, marine engines and wrought iron propellers; Moon used a corner of the workshop for his own design for an aircra , known rather inevitably as the Moonbeam. Moonbeam I was built with assistance from eo Smith, and tested on Webster’s Field at Ower Farm, between Fawley Thursday. The machine is all-British made, and was built and designed by Mr Edwin Moon, of Southampton. It is a small monoplane, and contains several original ideas, one of which is in the steering arrangements, the machine being entirely controlled by one wheel. … Considering that the trials are only initial ones, they were quite as good as could be expected, though owing to the bumpy state of the ground, which was like a quagmire, the machine did not rise. … Mr. Moon hopes, however, to have another try on Monday”. is prototype informed the design of the second model, Moonbeam II. e latter made its rst successful ight from elds at North Stoneham Farm, which later became Southampton Airport. eo Smith’s interest in ight continued independently of Moon. Moon himself later ew his plane regularly from Stoneham to other air elds around the area. A er a career in the Royal Naval Air Service during the Great War, in which he was twice awarded the Distinguished Service Order, he was tragically killed in 1920 in Felixstowe, in a ying boat crash, aged only 33. His grave is still visible in Southampton Cemetery. Moonbeam I at Beaulieu Heath, January 1910. Theo Smith at right and Calshot in the summer of 1909. e testing was not particularly conclusive, its ‘ ight’ consisting of a series of short hops. Further tests took place on January 30th 1910, at Beaulieu Heath. e Hampshire Independent reported: “The first Southamptonbuilt aeroplane was tried on Beaulieu Heath on GO ALONG AND ENJOY THE FUN ACTIVITIES Brockenhurst Gateway Club is a friendly, social club for adults (16+) with learning disabilities that meets every ursday evening from 7pm to 8.45pm in term time at Brockenhurst Village Hall. ey are always looking for more volunteers and also welcome new club members.
