When his Mum, Iga, asked him how he would like to raise money for his school, instead of the usual bake sale Angus said that he would like to collect litter. After some thought Iga and Stepdad Paddy came up with the suggestion of Angus getting sponsored for his litter picks. Iga set up a Just Giving page and after purchasing litter pickers, sacks and matching safety vests they set out in January collecting litter. In the first week alone Angus filled up 11 bags of litter from 5 different locations and donations to his page had exceeded £500. Iga comments: “Angus is very passionate about looking after planet Earth and knows a host of interesting facts about the environment, planets, animals and so on that many 5 year olds don’t. When we spoke to him about different ways of fundraising for school, such us the usual bake sale, doing ‘special’ chores, he said he would like to collect litter. At first we weren’t sure how to turn it into a fundraiser but then after brainstorming, we thought what if wanting and willing sponsors paid Angus, an inspirational 5 year from the Waterside, is on a mission to collect litter in the local area and gain sponsorship in return, raising money for his school in Marchwood. Continued from front page Arthur Page Celebrates 100 Years! A local former GP, living in Woodlands, celebrated his 100th birthday on 19th December with family and friends at a superb lunch in the New Forest. He had previously attended the Royal Marine Band performance in Portsmouth where his exploits as a dive-bomber pilot in WW2 were celebrated. Arthur joined the Fleet Air Arm in 1942, aged just 19, and took part in the battles in the Pacific aboard HMS Victorious in 1944 and 1945. He joined 849 Squadron flying a Fairey Barracuda that dived vertically towards the targets. His aircraft ditched in heavy seas but due to his flying skills Arthur and his 2 colleagues on board survived and were picked up from a life-raft and returned to the Victorious in order that he could fly another sortie the next day! He has the distinction of being the last pilot to land a Barracuda on a carrier flight deck. Arthur later flew the Grumman Avenger, capable of carrying more munitions and had a superior range but dived less steeply! Interviews with Arthur can be found on the Imperial War Museum website: www.iwm.org.uk/iwmconversations and search Arthur Page. His interviews are under item 33796. Arthur was also a founder member of New Forest Rotary and was very active even into his late nineties. He is now an honorary member but maintains a close interest in all club activities. Arthur Page

Months of meticulous planning also came together to produce one of the most successful events in the barbershop chorus’s history. A sell-out audience was treated to an evening of barbershop through the ages from the Southampton and New Forest-based chorus, which was ably supported by several a cappella quartets and octets. Ocean Harmony Chairman David Wilson declared the event ‘a triumph’, adding: “The chorus collectively and individually were magnificent. The audience loved you and appreciated the fantastic entertainment you provided for them. I am so proud of you and it is an absolute privilege to be your chairman.” Local charity, Mind Solent, New Forest Well-Being Centre, was chosen to benefit from the 20th anniversary event, staged in mid-January, which was put together Even some former members of the choir were invited to come out of the audience and join the finale at Hanger Farm Arts Centre, West Totton. The packed audience learned all about four-part harmony in barbershop as sections sang individually before joining together to produce some wonderful, ringing chords. Special guests at the charity concert were Southampton’s female a cappella octet, ‘Queen Bees’, and support acts were mixed octet ‘Intersection’ and quartets ‘Cabin Crew’ and ‘Southern Gentlemen’. For more information please visit: oceanharmony. co.uk Ocean Harmony’s 20th Anniversary Concert by volunteers from the chorus throughout 2023. The show, led by Musical Director, John Masters, offered a variety of songs, including pole cats, traditional barbershop classics and show tunes before ending with a joint performance of Irish Blessing. Historic Timber Helping To House Rescued Hedgehogs Towards the end of 2023 two members of Hythe Shed (at the pier), Greg Dawe and Luke Bracher visited East Boldre Hedgehog Rescue Centre to donate a very special hedgehog box. The hedgehog box was hand made at Hythe Shed using timber from the 100 year old battery boxes from the electric train on Hythe Pier. The baby hedgehog taking up residence was very pleased with his new home. A second visit was made shortly after when Hythe Shed donated a further three boxes to support the work of Louise Godden at East Boldre Hedgehog Rescue Centre. The Meddlars are the Forest’s only Morris side and can be seen in the summer dancing at pubs from Eling to Ringwood and Milford to Redlynch as well as at local fetes, festivals and events. Bumble accepting the cheque from the New Forest Meddlars We Are Looking for Good Samaritans From Fawley and District Voluntary Care Group The Fawley and District Voluntary Care Group are probably unknown to the majority of people but offer a valuable service to the local community. We cover Holbury, Fawley, Calshot, Langley, Exbury and Blackfield areas. We are a very small group of willing volunteers who do our best to help those who need transport to fulfil their daily lives. For the most part we take patients to hospital for their medical and treatment appointments. Mainly we help older generations who cannot drive, who are needing help in walking or maybe even seeing or maybe can’t drive because of their treatment on a specific day. We are there for them to complete those appointments. We do not get involved with serious mobility cases as we are not trained health workers but we do offer an arm to lean on sometimes. Our importance to the community is clear from the number of regular clients we have. We all use our own vehicles for which we get a generous mileage allowance which covers our fuel and a little towards general running costs but sadly no actual payment. We can choose when we are available to help. We would like to expand the number of drivers we have, so if you have some time you could offer, we would be pleased to have you on board and of course we will show you the ropes. Contact Nigel on: 023 8084 7129 or 07714 206397. Please be a Good Samaritan if you can.... At the first meeting of the New Year Janis Bevis was invited to go along and receive a donation for Barry’s Farm. The members raise money during the year for a local organisation and in 2023 they raised £620. Janis thanked everyone for such a generous donation and explained how the money will be used to look after the animals. The February program of events began on Friday 2nd February with a talk by Sandra Simmons on ‘Life after Iran’, and is followed on Friday 16th February when Philippa Drew will be giving a Weather Talk. Hythe’s iconic century old pier train was pushed into Hythe Pier’s Shore Station towards the end of January for the first time in almost two years. Gently, hand propelled by volunteers from Hythe Ferry staff, the Hythe Shed (at the Pier), and the Hythe Pier Heritage Association, the train and carriages were pushed along the new track for the first time since it was laid in December. The train was edged over the new points and along the track in order that the contractor could check the relationship between the train wheels, points, rails and the electric third rail. Holding a Guinness World Record for being the world’s oldest continuously operating electric train on a pier, the Hythe Pier Railway, which was inaugurated in 1922, has been operating from a temporary platform 43 metres down the pier since May 2022. Checks complete, and adjustments made, the new platform height could now be measured and the design and construction of a new station commence. The work is being funded by Hythe Pier Heritage Association which is keen to continue its restoration of Hythe Pier and its railway. On the evening of 20th January, crew from Calshot RNLI were attending their annual Christmas party, when they were tasked to their first shout of the year. Having designated a duty crew, volunteers were enjoying food and drink at the local Vibrant Forest Brewery, along with music provided by Calshot Launch Authority Jim Bryant’s band Barefoot Soul performing at the Christmas Party with Calshot Launch Authority Jim Bryant on the left. (Credit: RNLI/Justyn Leonard) Barefoot Soul, when they abruptly departed mid-way through Eagle Eye Cherry’s classic Save Tonight. On attending the station crew launched the Atlantic 85 B Class Lifeboat Max Walls and made good speed to the casualty who had been located in the water. On arrival at the scene volunteer crew, that included both a Paramedic and an Emergency Care Assistant provided casualty care before passing the casualty to the waiting team from South Central Ambulance Service before returning to the station to make the boat ready for service again. The shout not only marked the first shout of 2024 for the Calshot crew, it also represented the first paged shouts for new crew members James Silsbury and James ‘JJ’ Johnston. Of the shout, Barefoot Soul singer and Calshot volunteer Launch Authority, Bryant said: “It was perhaps apt that we were playing Save Tonight when the crew left, however we had a moment of panic as its never a good sign when performing when a number of the audience walk out part way through your set!” Volunteer Trainee Helm, Daniel Reeve added: “Whilst it was a shame to miss an event that had been so many months in organising, as a crew we are committed to saving lives at sea and when the call came we were focused on answering it.”

Francis Suttill (codenamed Prosper) was the leader of the biggest SOE circuit in France, yet his story has rarely been told. Yvonne Rudellat (codenamed Jacqueline) was one of his couriers and the first female SOE agent to be sent behind enemy lines in German-occupied France. She was also part of the same regiment as Lady Montagu, who is a member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY). Both agents were very different people, though trained at Beaulieu’s SOE ‘finishing school’ during the same month, worked in the same circuit and were captured only a few days apart. They were ordinary people living in the safety of England at the outbreak of WWII and yet put themselves forward for some of the most dangerous missions in France, their country of birth. Lady Montagu said: “The personalities of those who volunteered for such hazardous work has always fascinated me. I believe that being part of two countries gave a shared allegiance, but also created a tension which made them feel they didn’t wholly belong to either. This set them apart from their compatriots.” She added: “Whether or not you concur with this view, I am sure you will agree when you have read their stories that the war turned two ordinary individuals into quite exceptional people.” Following the 80th anniversary of the fall of the Prosper network, Lady Montagu has opened an exhibition to share their stories for the first time. It can be seen as part of a visit to Beaulieu in the Secret Army Exhibition. Painting a family picture: Surviving family members of both agents have met with Lady Montagu to build a picture of their lives before they joined SOE and what led to that decision. Francis left two baby sons who he never saw again after joining SOE and taking up his role in France, where he organised hundreds of agents and supporters for the network. Yvonne left a daughter behind when she trained to become an agent at the relatively late age of 45, then kept explosives under her bed in France and used them to sabotage train links, factories and a power station. Their families have loaned personal photographs and the agents’ medals, as well as one of Prosper’s original canisters which would have contained guns and ammunition when it was dropped by parachute for the Resistance. Yvonne’s suitcase, complete with her lace-bordered handkerchief, has also been loaned to Lady Montagu to help illustrate her story. Personal letters home put their stories into context. One from the War Office to Mrs Suttill says “I am very pleased to be able to inform you that your husband has arrived safely at his destination and is in good health”, while another encloses a letter from her husband. In it, he says: “I was, as you know, to be going today but it has now been postponed till the 27th (September 1942) so as to give me time to get everything ready. Ever since Friday midday till late last night, I have been talked and talked at – I am sorry if I was not too clear last night but I had completely ceased to think at all clearly.” Francis was dropped ‘blind’ with no reception committee 12km from his intended point and dislocated his knee, breaking the cartilage where the muscles were already atrophied from his childhood polio. The package dropped with him was not his suitcase of clothes but a wireless set he knew nothing about. As there were doubts about his accent, he met up with his courier Andree Borrel several days later and together, they set off on a tour of northern France to begin creating and organising groups to resist the German occupation. Her friends remembered her as a romantic soul, often creating fantasies about herself and dreaming of adventure. In his report about Yvonne, Francis later said: “She cycles about at night with her plastics and is extremely handy at blowing up things. Her explosives are stored under her bed. She looks 15 years younger and has definitely found her niche.” Neither of the agent’s stories ended well. After the fall of the Prosper circuit, both were captured. There now is only one fossil fuelled vehicle and that is a small petrol Peugeot. The competition is open to anyone and the winning names will be emblazoned on the vehicles. The volunteers are on-site from 8am on operating days and are happy to explain what they do, sailing starts with customers at 10am. Testwood Lakes Sailability is a volunteer-run charity that provides dinghy sailing to any person with a disability who is over 8 years old. They operate out of the 4th Eling Sea Scout HQ at Testwood Lakes Totton. Sailing is on Monday (Not BH) and Thursday from April to the end of October. They are always on the lookout for new volunteers to do a variety of roles not just sailing. These roles vary from Receptionists who welcome the sailors, people to look after the sailors, tea making, furniture moving, tent erecting, assisting sailors into and out of the dinghies, ensuring that the operation is safe and of course the on-water activities of sailing dinghies and the safety boats. It is now February and preparations are well in hand for the new season. For some of the volunteers that includes First Aid Training. Then a few take on the dirty job of cleaning the pontoon followed by checking that the dinghies are in good order for the new season. In March they will have some training and refresher sessions for all volunteers so that everyone remembers what to do after the winter break. The new sailing season begins on Thursday 4th April, they are looking forward to receiving the sailors back to the enjoyment of sailing. Page 16 • The HERALD • 15th February 2024 v SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES v WATERSIDE NETWORK GROUP: MEMBER FOCUS by Simon Chadwick Running a small to medium-sized business is a time-consuming affair, with the business owner often having to wear many hats. Consequently, the need to keep the cashflow rolling can become a greater priority than other tasks. This means day-today admin slides, things don’t get sorted or filed, and, generally, the office ends up increasingly disorganised. Getting on top of such a situation can be too much to face, but not doing so can only have a detrimental affect on your business. So, what’s the answer? Colette’s Admin Services offers all types of office administration for business, and the best part is that you can use Colette for as little or as much as you need. Where a full-time or even parttime employee may be impractical, using Colette’s Admin Services for only what you need is the cost efficient and practical answer. Colette offers secretarial and P.A. services, data inputting into databases (both bespoke and off-the-shelf), policy writing, sorting and filing paperwork, creating forms, organising offices, attending meetings (and minutes of meetings) and typing correspondence. Colette’s experience in the care sector also means she can assist companies in both gaining their CQC registration and assisting in getting set up. As an example, a company was relocating and needed their offices prepared for personnel to move into. Just eleven large boxes of paperwork and three new empty filing cabinets were all that were in there. Colette successfully had everything sorted, filed and labelled before the rest of the equipment and staff arrived three days later. Whatever the task, you can relax in the knowledge that it’s being taken care of, while you get on with what you need to do. To find out more, please contact Colette Hemstritch-Johnston at Colette’s Admin Services via the contact details, opposite. Colette Hemstritch-Johnston, Colette’s Admin Services Banishing The Winter Blues by Georgie Rand, Yoga With Georgie Daffodils and longer days are here at last, and joining kind and friendly people, while doing something beneficial and relaxing, can boost our mood and make us feel like it’s worth leaving the house!
